24th Annual Olive Harvest Season in Bethlehem

The ELCJHL, the Environmental Education Center, the Bethlehem Peace Center and the Bethlehem Municipality launched the 24th National Olive Harvest Season and Shopping Days this weekend.
The events at the Peace Center were held in cooperation with the Bethlehem Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Directorate of Agriculture, and the Rural Women's Development Society.
In the midst of extremely difficult circumstances, the continuation of this annual event for 24 years shows the significance of the olive tree in Palestinian life. It is not only an important aspect of the economy, but a symbol of national resilience.
Bishop Sani Ibrahim Azar spoke at the event, expressing his hope that next year the event will be held under better circumstances, and that the harvest can proceed without the challenges that have persisted this year.
Over 24 years, the Olive Harvest Festival has become an important representation of life in Bethlehem. Due to the ongoing war, celebratory aspects of the event such as music, dancing, and other performances have been canceled. However, national holidays intended for harvesting olives have continued, along with a market for local farmer’s and artisans.
EEC Director Simon Awad said that this year’s slogan, “Remain as an Olive Tree,” represents the goal of continuing this important tradition despite the situation. Many farmers in the West Bank have faced violence from Israeli soldiers or settlers while attempting to harvest this year.
The organizers also opened the annual art competition for students of universities and higher education institutions, which is carried out in partnership between the Center for Environmental Education and the Ministry of Education and Higher Education.
This year's competition encouraged students to deepen their connection with the olive tree as a representation of the natural world and of spirituality. Students submitted many beautiful representations of the olive tree’s role and symbolism in Palestine.
